Studies on the Development of the Palatum Osseum of the Korean Fetus

Abstract
Four hundred and thirty one palatum osseum of Korean fetuses (male 227, female 204) aged from the 5th month to the 10th month in utero were studied on their shapes and growth.
1. The form of the palatum osseum as a whole was regular square shape in the 5th and 6th months, and after 7th month it became trapezoid.
2. The course of the incisal suture was passed behind and lateral in the 5,,th and 6 th months, and after 7 th month it passed straight.
3. The form of the incisal bone as a whole was regular triangular shape in the 5 th month,, and after 6 th month it became triangle.
4. The course of the transverse palatine suture passed behind and lateral from the median palatine suture in the 5 th and 6 th fetal months, and after 6 th month it passed straight.
5. The form of the median palatine suture was mostly straight throughout the fetal period.
6. The form of the posterior nasal spine was mostly low-trapezoid shape throughout the fetal period.
7. The palatal length(l), palatal length(2), anterior palatal length, length of incisal bone and length of proper maxillae in the 5th month of the fetal age were 9.3, 10.4, 8.4, 1.4, 7.4 mm. respectively, These measure ments increased regulary as the increase of the age of the fetuses.
Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 2.3 times in palatal length(1), 2.2 times in palatal length(2), 2.2 times in anterior palatal length, 3.2 times in length of incisal bone and 2.1 times in length of proper maxillae, as compared with the 5 th month measurements.
8. The anterior palatal width, posterior palatal width and greatest palatal width were 8.3 , 9.3, 9.4 mm. respectively. These measurements increased regularly as the progress of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 2.1 times in anterior and posterior palatal widths, 2.3 times in greatest palatal width, as compared with the 5 th month measurements,
9. The palatal height(l), palatal height(2) was 1.3, 0.7 mm. respectively, The measurements increased regularly as the increase of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 4.0 times in palatal height(1), 4.2 times in palatal height(2), as compared with the 5 th month measurements.
10. No significant data were found between the male and female.
11. No significant racial difference between Japanese fetus and Korean fetus was noticeable.
